Richmond, VA – The Richmond Figure Skating is hosting two events in 2015 in advance of the Eastern Synchronized Skating Sectional Championship which will be held in Richmond in late January 2016 at the Richmond Coliseum and Greater Richmond Convention Center. The first event will be an exhibition, meet and greet and open house Saturday, January 3, 2015 at noon at RVA On Ice located at Broad and 6th streets and the South Atlantic Synchro Open will be held on Sunday, January 11, 2015 at the Richmond Coliseum.

The Richmond Figure Skating Club is hosting the exhibition at RVA On Ice Saturday, January 3 in efforts to create awareness about the South Atlantic Synchro Open, January 11, 2015 and the Eastern Synchronized Skating Sectional Championship in January of 2016. The event at RVA On Ice is free and the public will have the opportunity to meet skaters from the competitive teams of the Richmond Figure Skating Club, watch a demonstration of synchronized skating required patterns, learn more about the club and will be invited to join the skaters on the ice for instruction and fun.

The Richmond Figure Skating Club will host thirty-two synchronized skating teams from the Mid-Atlantic region for the South Atlantic Synchro Open with teams that range from the little Beginners up to the Intermediate level (high school age), including teams from Richmond Synchro. The South Atlantic Synchro Open is a non-qualifying competition and is one of similar competitions held every year in North Carolina; Cape Cod; Lowell, Massachusetts; Ann Arbor, Michigan and Stamford, Connecticut that draw skaters to compete in preparation for the large qualifying event in late January. These smaller regional events include all levels and give the teams an opportunity to get judged and to prepare for the Eastern Sectionals each year. This year, the 2014 Eastern Sectionals are being held in Lake Placid, NY and three of the Richmond Synchro teams will represent Richmond at that larger event.

Tickets for the South Atlantic Synchro Open are $12.00 for adults, children 5 and under are free, students 6- 12 are $8.00 and seniors 55 and up are $10.00. Tickets are available now at the Ford Box Office at the Richmond Coliseum. ADA seating available. Ford Box Office hours are Monday – Friday from 10 am – 5 pm, 4-8 pm on Saturday, January 10, 2015 and 8 am-Noon the day of the event

The Richmond Figure Skating Club is also hosting the Eastern Synchronized Skating Sectional Championship right here in Richmond in late January, 2016. This event will bring together over 2500 skaters from approximately 165 teams encompassing the entire east coast for four to five days of competition at both the Richmond Coliseum and Greater Richmond Convention Center. The top teams from this competition will go on to the National Championships. The RFSC expects over 10,000 people to attend this event. Synchronized Team Skating is gaining in popularity around the world and has been submitted for consideration to the International Olympic Committee for inclusion in the 2018 Winter Olympics.

Richmond Synchro’s program was created in 2001 starting out with a group of 10 teens. Two years ago, the program boasted seven teams and over 75 skaters ranging from 5-6 year old Beginners to Adults in their 50s and 60s and started a Collegiate program two years ago. This year the program has four teams: a Beginner team, a Preliminary Team, Open Juvenile and Intermediate levels. Several skaters have gone on to skate in successful Collegiate programs. Currently, one alumni of Richmond Synchro is a senior and member of the reigning National Medalist team with the University of Delaware, others attend the University of Michigan, University of Illinois, University of Colorado as well as local skaters who attend VCU and the University of Richmond.
