RAIDERS TO RENEW ACQUAINTANCES WITH STAMPEDE
Harrisburg (PA) team and Trenton (NJ) Freedom to join PIFL in 2014
The Professional Indoor Football League (PIFL) announced today that the Harrisburg Stampede will join the league for the 2014 season. This is the second addition to the league in the last two weeks, following last week’s announcement that the Trenton Freedom franchise will join the league. The two new additions, along with the Richmond Raiders and Lehigh Valley SteelHawks, will anchor the northern region of the PIFL’s footprint.
“In addition to giving us two natural rivalries, and giving our fans more chances to travel and see us play on the road, adding Harrisburg and Trenton fits our league’s model of sustainable growth and a super-regional footprint,” said Raiders Business GM Tim Hurley. “As we enter our fifth season, we will be able to renew our rivalry with Harrisburg, and we expect to have some great games with Trenton, as we did with Lehigh Valley last year.”
The Stampede will enter the PIFL with a championship pedigree, and some history with the Raiders as well. The teams played each other twice in 2010 and once in 2011, before the Raiders joined the PIFL. While the Raiders have advanced to the PIFL Championship Game in 2012 and 2013, the Stampede have had similar success in a prior league.
The Stampede are owned by New Orleans Saints wide receiver Marques Colston. “I am very excited about the move into the PIFL this season,” said Colston. “After getting a feel for their vision and the direction they are heading as a league, we look forward to the opportunity to grow together.”
“The addition of Harrisburg is another piece of the puzzle as we work towards being an elite indoor football league,” said PIFL Executive Committee Member Jeff Knight. “Marques is everything you would want in a business partner, an owner that is responsive to the community and shares our vision for a better league.”
Earlier this month, the PIFL announced that the Trenton Freedom have been awarded an expansion franchise and will begin play in the 2014 season. A committed ownership group, combined with Trenton’s geographic proximity to Richmond and Lehigh Valley, made the Freedom a natural fit in the PIFL’s footprint and business model. The Raiders played against a team from Trenton in 2011; however the Freedom are an entirely separate franchise with a different ownership group.
“Trenton and Harrisburg are great indoor football cities. The level of competition in the PIFL has increased every year, and we expect it to be even greater in 2014,” Hurley continued. “The coaches and players in Harrisburg have championship experience, and the talent in the New Jersey area should make the Freedom a quality team from the beginning. We look forward to facing both teams in the 2014 season and beyond.”
The Raiders will hold an open tryout at the Richmond Coliseum on October 19.
