SMG Richmond’s Dwight Johnson Honored as Sports Tourism MVP by Richmond Region Tourism

Richmond Region Tourism has named SMG Richmond General Manager Dwight Johnson as the recipient of its Sports Tourism Award for 2017. The honor was presented at the organization’s I Am Tourism Awards ceremony and recognizes outstanding leadership in promoting local athletics as a tool to attract visitors to the Richmond Region.

Dwight and his team at the SMG-managed Richmond Coliseum were singled out for their support of sports tourism and understanding the impact it has on the area.

“Customer service is always at the center of what he does,” said Richmond Region Tourism President and CEO Jack Berry. “Dwight starts with ‘yes’ then works through the details to make things happen. He is quick to provide solutions that create wins for the client, his organization, and the larger tourism efforts.”

SMG Richmond Regional General Manager Dolly Vogt said, “We are proud to have Dwight as part of our family at SMG Richmond. He is an asset to the city because of his commitment to providing guests and clients at Richmond Coliseum with the best possible experience.”

Under Dwight’s guidance, recent sporting events at Richmond Coliseum have included the USA Figure Skating Eastern Region Synchronized Skating Championships, Atlantic 10 Women’s Basketball Championship, Freedom Classic, Times-Dispatch Invitational Tournament, Arena Racing USA and several cheerleading competitions. Richmond Coliseum is home to the Richmond Roughriders of Arena Pro Football and it will host the upcoming Southeastern Rodeo Association Black Rodeo on June 3.
